Dazed and Confused magazine team up with Channel 4 to produce a five-part series exploring underground scenes from Britain’s recent musical history – UK garage, Bristol bass, jungle, hardcore punk and Balearic.
Each 30 minute documentary will present key players, fashions and music of the scenes and explore their impact on British youth culture.
This series also marks Dazed’s move into broadcast TV and advertising-funded programming. Executive Producer Ravi Amaratunga states that he is “thrilled to be able to create genuinely authentic and authored music series that stays true to the stories behind these amazing scenes, which have helped define British culture as a whole.”
It all kicks off with a full-length documentary of garage author and photographer Ewen Spencer’s Brandy & Coke on April 2.
Following that the documentary Berkshire Goes Balearic recounts the untold story of the Balearic sound, and how hedonism gripped the hearts, minds and dance floors of the Home Counties, fuelled by the freewheeling party island of Ibiza.
BERKSHIRE GOES BALEARIC
Directed by Tabitha Denholm and produced by Partizan, explores Berkshire’s contribution to a cultural revolution inspired by a trip that four DJ’s took in 1987 to Ibiza. After returning from an ecstasy-infused musical journey where Euro-pop harmonised with House and Indie resonated with industrial beats, the DJ’s were inspired to bring Balearic back to Britain.
The Episode will be aired on Thursday 10th April at 12:05am and available to watch on Dazed Digital on Thursday 17th April. Watch the trailer here:
